Art Forum by Niels 'Nails' Oeltjen

12.30PM Friday 1 May 2009
School of Art, UTAS
Hunter Street, Hobart
Free and open to all

Niels Oeltjen is an artist and designer from Melbourne. Niels acquired a Bachelor of Fine Art from the Tasmanian School of Art UTAS in 1998, and since then has worked as a street artist under various monikers (the most recognized being ‘Nails’) as well as working as an exhibiting fine artist. A sideline in graphic design and illustration risks becoming a profession and accomplishments in the field include his recent contribution at acclaimed typography studio ‘Letterbox’, developing several notable typefaces, and pushing illustration along under the wing of the Jacky Winter illustration agency.

Niels’ art practice is a diverse one finding its genesis in graffiti and the street art scene of Melbourne in the early 2000s, and which saw him quickly becoming one of its main protagonists and style leaders. From there his work quickly branched into other media, bringing his unique approach and vibrant energy with it, and garnering him a solid fan-base, locally and internationally. He continues to exhibit alongside many notable artists in influential spaces, both locally and internationally. He recently launched a print publishing business named Wilkintie in partnership with his wife.– Paul ‘Pogo’ Jones 2009
